As you focus on your journey in your 50s, it is important to put a reminder in place on the dynamics of being a 50-something years old. Let us explore the happiness and challenges of the age bracket, what is expected of you and how to prepare for the next level, your 60s. In this part of the world, if you still fail to succeed in whatever you are doing in your 50s, chances are that the life has failed and you need the power of God to survive. Here are 20 facts of life a man should know about his 50s.

Breaking our lifetime into age brackets is essential to guide our lives, offer and obey instructions and perhaps to guide this lecture properly.

Age classification by African understanding differs from what obtains in other parts of the world. Our cultures, attitudes, histories, and support systems are different.

Therefore, my classification is these…

  • Infants age: birth to 4 years.
  • Children: 4 – 12
  • Teenagers 13 – 19
  • Prime adulthood20 – 39
  • Middle adults 40 – 50
  • Senior Adults 51-64
  • Elders 65 – 70
  • Old age 70 –

Age fifty holds great significance as a milestone in a person’s life, particularly in Africa where the reality of our situation necessitates attention.

In developed countries, there are more opportunities to achieve notable milestones, whereas in many parts of Africa, individuals are often left to fend for themselves.

Without proper guidance, one’s life can lack meaning in such circumstances.

Therefore, it is essential to provide reminders for people of all age groups to understand their goals and accomplishments at specific stages of life.

These reminders serve as warnings, particularly for men, about the preparations needed for the magical age of 50 and what to expect in the 50-60 age bracket, ensuring they are not caught off guard.

  1. BELIEVE IT, THE HOME RUN STARTS NOW

At age 50, you are commencing a home run. For people in paid employment, the time is now to start vigorous planning and activities towards retirement and legacy projects.

It is time to start agreeing within yourself that you have spent the better part of your life. The youthful era where you can jump up and down is gradually getting over, and you are scratching the nearest crust of your old age.

If, at this age, so many things are not in place for you to take care of yourself in your old age, you better start now.

  2. PRIORITIZE YOUR HEALTH:

Prioritize your health as you reach 50, as your body signals its importance.

The natural process of ageing brings about changes, including the appearance of grey hair in your 50s if it hasn’t already started in your mid-40s.

This phase also reveals the consequences of past habits, such as excessive alcohol consumption, smoking, overeating, and a promiscuous lifestyle.

Between 51 and 55, there’s still an opportunity to maintain agility, but once you approach 60, taking health seriously becomes crucial.

Schedule regular check-ups, follow a healthy diet, exercise regularly, limit alcohol, quit smoking, manage stress, and practice self-care. Prioritizing your health now will enhance your well-being and quality of life in the future.

  3. CAREER STABILITY:

By the age of fifty, most individuals have likely achieved a level of professional stability and attained senior positions within their careers.

Career changes at this stage can be challenging unless presented with prestigious opportunities.

If contemplating a change, it is crucial to reflect on the reasons and assess the potential benefits of transitioning.

Additionally, turning fifty provides an excellent opportunity to explore entrepreneurship or pursue personal passions.

With a steady income, starting planning for retirement and attaining financial freedom is important.

Assessing one’s financial situation and creating a retirement plan that aligns with goals and aspirations becomes essential.

The question to ponder is: what steps can be taken to ensure self-sufficiency and avoid relying on others for support?

  4. ACCOMMODATION

Suppose you are still a salary earner at this age and have not put a roof over your head, in that case, you have the last chance to do so, except if you are sure your retirement benefits include the accommodation you will live in till death or the benefit is huge enough to get you one.

In this part of the world or anywhere, it is terrible to move to the next age cadre and still pay rent. At age fifty, apart from putting in place what would put food on your table, you must have your accommodation.

  5. YOUR SEXUAL AGILITY IS REDUCED

As you reach the age of 50 and beyond, you may experience physical and emotional symptoms that affect your sexual agility, such as erectile dysfunction in men.

Mood swings, irritability, loss of muscle mass, and reduced exercise capacity are common in this age group. It’s essential to be aware that you may not be able to engage in multiple rounds of sexual activity or sustain it for extended periods.

Decreased sexual agility is a natural part of ageing and shouldn’t be cause for alarm. Your partner, who has shared a long-lasting commitment with you, would understand and accept this change.

At this stage, your relationship focuses on shared purposes, family stability, and supporting your children as they find their paths. While the sexual drive may decline, it’s important to prioritize and regularly make time for intimacy.

  6. EXERCISE

As we age past 50, our bodies naturally slow down, but incorporating daily physical activity brings numerous benefits.

Regular exercise enhances sleep, boosts cognitive abilities, reduces symptoms of depression and anxiety, lowers the risk of chronic illnesses, such as diabetes and heart disease, and prevents weight gain.

Starting a consistent workout routine is essential and doesn’t have to be overwhelming or time-consuming. Consider your schedule and find a manageable commitment.

You may prefer exercising in the morning before work or after a long day. No matter your choice, begin now.

With wisdom gained over the years, embrace the opportunity to prioritize your health and well-being.

  7. FREEDOM AND AUTONOMY

As individuals approach the age of 50, they often find themselves enjoying newfound freedom and independence. This stage of life can bring a sense of flexibility in terms of time, finances, and personal choices.

With children growing older and becoming more independent, individuals may have the chance to redirect their focus towards personal goals and desires.

This can be a time to explore new hobbies, pursue long-awaited dreams, or embark on new adventures.

Embracing this stage of life with a sense of purpose and vision can lead to a fulfilling and satisfying journey of self-discovery and personal growth.

  8. CORRECT ERRORS

The age of 50 brings a moment of deep introspection and a chance to mend fences. It is crucial to reconcile with your spouse if your marriage is in turmoil, ensuring a peaceful and fulfilling old age.

Both men and women may face loneliness and hardships in later years without a life partner. Additionally, if your children lack guidance or haven’t found success, you may experience ongoing sadness and regret.

While others’ children thrive, yours may rely on your financial support. This is an opportunity to rectify these aspects of life, preventing prolonged sorrow.

It’s never too late to mend relationships, seek guidance, and find resolution. Embrace this turning point with energy and time to shape a future without regrets.

  9. STRONG RELATIONSHIP

As you approach 50, strong personal and professional connections are expected to be in place. These relationships, encompassing friends, family, and colleagues, provide crucial support and companionship as you age.

This stage also offers an opportunity to revive old friendships, deepen existing bonds, and engage actively with your community.

Recognize the profound significance of the relationships developed throughout your educational and professional journey.

With potential weddings and the loss of older family members, having a supportive network becomes crucial. The value of these connections goes beyond material wealth; they shape your actual net worth.

Strong relationships act as a non-monetary currency, offering intangible rewards and opportunities. Embrace the role of relationships in your achievements rather than relying solely on financial means.

Fortunate individuals have friends and well-wishers contributing to important life events, demonstrating a fulfilling life marked by meaningful contributions.

  10. WRONG TIME TO RELOCATE

Amidst the ongoing challenges in Nigeria, many individuals, including those in their 50s or 60s, contemplate relocating to different parts of the world.

However, it is important to exercise caution and consider the implications.

Starting anew in a foreign land means leaving behind the foundations you have built throughout your life, including relationships, time invested, and acquired skills.

The value of relationships should not be underestimated. Relocating often means starting from scratch unless the move is solely for financial gain, with plans to return to Nigeria eventually.

If your intention is to settle permanently, finding true purpose and fulfilment may be challenging without divine support.

Nonetheless, if you possess the means and capabilities, this could be an opportune time for travel, exploration, and pilgrimage.

If you have devoted your earlier years to significant endeavours and have accumulated wealth, now is a favourable moment to indulge in enjoyment, visit new places, and broaden your horizons.

  11. VOLUNTEER OR GIVE BACK

At 50, you cannot live longer than you have lived. Very few people would live another 50 years after living the first 50.

Start viewing what would be said about you if you passed on today. It is an excellent time to start contributing to your community or a cause you care about through volunteering or charitable donations.

Start building a good reputation for yourself if you have lived carelessly.

These are the people who will attend your weddings, celebrate with your family, speak at your burial and support your children when you are gone.

At 50, be deliberate with all you do. This is the period to create your legacy: Write books, write an epitaph, and ponder why you are here and what you have achieved.

  12. MAKE A DIFFERENCE: VOLUNTEER AND GIVE BACK

Reaching the age of 50 serves as a significant reminder of life’s finite nature. Rarely does someone get another 50 years after experiencing the first half-century.

Contemplating our own mortality prompts reflection on what others would say about us if we were to pass away today.

This realization offers a remarkable opportunity to start making a positive impact on our community or a cause close to our hearts through volunteering or charitable contributions.

If our past has been self-focused, now is the time to change that. By actively contributing to our community, we can forge a reputation cherished by those around us.

Volunteer your time, skills, or resources to causes that resonate with you.

Engage in charitable donations that support organizations dedicated to positive change. By doing so, you can contribute to a brighter future and leave behind a meaningful legacy for generations to come.

  13. EMPOWERED SPIRITUAL LEADERSHIP

Upon reaching 50, prepare yourself to embrace a life of religious dedication.

Offer solace to the grieving, offer prayers of healing to the sick, guide those who have strayed, enlighten the uninformed, maintain a clear mind, foster a close relationship with the divine, and cultivate a reputation of utmost respect within your community. While in your youth, you may have spoken and acted in a youthful manner, but now, as an elder, it is time to embody the wisdom and responsibilities that come with age.

If you are a member of a Church, strive to become a deacon, elder, or even a pastor. However, if you are not in a leadership position, there is no shame in that.

Nevertheless, it is crucial that the Church recognizes you as spiritually mature and views you as a mentor who can be called upon to serve.

People should feel comfortable seeking your guidance, having witnessed your exemplary life.

Instead of dwelling on past failures or comparing yourself to those who have achieved greater success, let go of any regrets or frustrations.
  16. STAY SOCIALLY ACTIVE

Maintaining an active social life is crucial to promote overall well-being as you enter your fifties.

Participating in social activities, joining clubs or groups with shared interests, and nurturing connections and friendships can greatly improve your quality of life.

This stage of life may bring challenges like drifting friendships, disappointments, negativity, and even the loss of friends.

Instead of isolating yourself, use these circumstances as an opportunity to meet new people, revive existing friendships, and explore new hobbies.

Remaining socially active helps combat the loneliness that often comes with ageing.

However, it’s essential to prioritize your health and well-being by avoiding activities that could harm you physically or mentally.

By staying engaged socially, you can establish a network of supportive relationships and find solace and companionship in this stage of life.

Remember that in this part of Africa, marriage often extends beyond the couple to encompass the larger family unit.

People are curious to know about the background and reputation of the father and mother, as it reflects upon the family as a whole.

  18. AT AGE 50, DON’T BE AFRAID TO START AGAIN

Embrace the notion that starting afresh at 50 should not be feared.

If you feel convinced that your current path leads nowhere, there is no shame in turning back and commencing anew.

Remember, no matter how far you have travelled down the wrong road, it remains the wrong road, and the wisest decision is to retrace your steps.

Beginning anew at 50 does not necessitate discarding everything from your past. It involves harnessing your experiences, embracing change, and seizing fresh opportunities.

History is replete with examples of late bloomers who achieved extraordinary success:

    * Colonel Harland Sanders established the renowned Kentucky Fried Chicken restaurant chain at the age of 65.

    • Laura Ingalls Wilder penned the beloved “Little House on the Prairie” series, starting at 65, which became a beloved television show.

    • Charles Darwin published his groundbreaking Theory of Evolution at 50, gaining worldwide renown.

    • Momofuku Ando invented instant noodles at 50 and lived until the ripe age of 96.

    • Ray Kroc, the mastermind behind McDonald’s, purchased his first restaurant from the McDonald brothers at 59, transforming it into a global franchise and the world’s most successful fast-food corporation, amassing a fortune during his lifetime.

    • Peter Mark Roget published Roget’s Thesaurus at the age of 73.
These remarkable individuals serve as testaments that age should never hinder the pursuit of new endeavours.

  19. PREPARE FOR LEADERSHIP WHEREVER YOU ARE

Engaging in politics at a young age has benefits, but turning 50 is a significant milestone that brings eligibility for top leadership positions.

Across the globe, it’s evident that many leaders are in their 40s, 50s, or older.

Whether in your profession, community, or personal relationships, the wisdom and experience gained over the years make you a valuable asset and a potential leader.

Supporting others in their leadership development by offering guidance and assistance contributes to the overall success of your organization or community.

True leadership goes beyond giving instructions; it involves leading by example. As someone aged 50 and above, you can serve as a role model for those in their 30s and 40s, even among your peers, through your actions.

Foster collaboration and teamwork, as effective leadership thrive on these qualities. Encourage diverse perspectives and establish an inclusive environment where everyone’s contributions are valued.

  20. DECLUTTER YOUR MIND

As you age, it’s important to declutter your mind for clarity and well-being. Mental clutter from accumulated responsibilities, experiences, and thoughts can hinder focus.

Forgetting things easily is natural as you approach 60, so rely on tools like diaries, reminders, and visible calendars instead of solely relying on memory.

Practicing mindfulness and immersing yourself in the present moment without judgment helps you gain clarity by simplifying your life and letting go of past regrets.

Self-reflection and journaling allow for expression, releasing thoughts onto paper and providing insights.

Seek support from trusted individuals to share ideas, gain perspectives, and alleviate mental burdens.
