THE FOOLISHNESS OF GOD IS WISER THAN THE WISDOM OF MAN
For some people, the concept of God is pure foolishness, at best, a white man’s invention. The Bible is nothing but Jewish history. Many of us have been faced with phases of life that we reject the godly options before us.
If the biblical characters faced with the ‘foolishness of God’ had rejected the options, we would perhaps have no miracles to point at today! Let me cite some examples!
MOSES: with over two million people being pursued by the Egyptian army, Moses would say: God, why would you take us tru the Red Sea? Have you built a bridge? Getting to the bank of the sea, God said, Moses point the rod in your hand towards the sea. I can hear Moses say… DO WHAT? Will this rod turn to a bridge? God, how foolish can this be!
ELIJAH: The brook dried up, the sparrow stopped bringing food. God said go to a poor widow in Zarepath who will feed you. I can hear Elijah say, God! You didn’t send me to Dangote to feed me. Not Bill Gates, not Folorunsho Alakija, but a poor widow waiting for death. God, how foolish can this be!
JOSHUA: at the mighty wall of Jericho, no amount of physical strength can bring down this wall. Rather than God call Angel Gabriel and Michael to approach the Heavenly infantry battalion to provide ballistic missiles and rocket launcher to bring down the wall, God said, “waka round the wall seven times and be shouting Hallelujah, the wall will come down.” Ha! God, how foolish can this be. This wall!
GIDEON: God, our enemies are many, so we need like a million soldiers to prosecute the battle but only 32,000 showed up. But God said even that number is too much. I need only 300! Ha! God you want to disgrace us ni? 300 to face millions? How foolish can this be!
12 DISCIPLES: for Jesus to do a good job of saving the world, one expects that He would assemble professionals like professors, doctors, engineers in Jerusalem. But wait o! Jesus recruited tax collectors, rustic fishermen, etc. God! You want to save the world with illiterates? How foolish can this be!
The list is endless. But i dare say, God’s wisdom is a kind of paradox. In human thinking, strength is strength, weakness is weakness and intelligence is intelligence. But in God’s economy, the seemingly strongest things are the weakest, some of the weakest, the strongest, the seemingly wisest things, the most foolish. The paradox is not by accident but by God’s design.
FOOLISHNESS JUSTIFIED
At the end of the day, the Red Sea parted! Wall of Jericho sank! Elijah was fed! Gideon won the war! Leprosy left Naaman! A stone killed Goliath! A fish ate Jonah but couldn’t digest him! Jesus ran his ministry, all of them using foolish methods!
No wonder 1 Corinthians 1:26 says, God has chosen the foolish things of the world to shame the wise, and God has chosen the weak things of the world to shame the things which are strong…” The foolishness of God is wiser than the wisdom of man.
