For the next edition of e-life, we are currently conducting a Vox Pop on why so many people tend to criticise pastors or the Church these days.
You will be shocked at the responses we have gotten so far. You need to see the words some people are using for our pastors and pictures painted of our Churches. Are Nigerian pastors this bad? Please, tell me, how did we get to this level of cynicism?
Whenever anything happens, these people are quick to blame pastors, as if the congregation are saints themselves. They see nothing good in pastors. To them, all pastors are thieves, tithe collectors and the Churches needless. Oyedepo said he would add 10,000 parishes, they blasted him as building more business centres. Adeboye said he wants a camp as big as Ibadan, they said he is after tithes.
When Baba Ara died so many years ago, the ancestors of today’s critics blamed the white garment Church for not seeing that Baba Ara was sick unto death. One man told me that anytime he hears the word pastor or Bishop, what occurs to him is someone who wants to steal his money.
Yesterday, I was listening to one of their generations saying with all the Holy Ghost and speaking in tongues of American pastors, Nigerian pastors, Ghanaian pastors, etc none of them saw in their December vision of year 2020 that Coronavirus would hit the world but they know how to collect tithe. Please, what has tithe got to do with Coronavirus?
The pain I have in all of these is that the enemies of the Church and pastors are not the Muslims or the Boko Haram. You don’t find Muslims abuse our Churches and pastors. Check out the names of the people writing hate speech about the Church on the social media, they bear biblical names. How come the enemies of Christianity are people born in ‘Christian’ homes, bearing names after Christ?
