Last week or so, I saw a video of an interview Peter Obi granted. In it, he said he doesn’t eat at burials because burial is one of the wastages disturbing Nigerians. (Disclaimer: this is not a campaign for Peter Obi)

Just now, I saw another post on burials, that people do eat and even cart food home at burials of parents who probably died of hunger. Their children did not take care of them while alive, but immediately they dropped dead, these shameless children start importing cows from the Sahel, buying Swiss lace, taking aso-ebi, and renting deep freezers and expensive halls for their burials. Many parents who died are victims of children’s stupidities.

Thank you Obi for that attitude to life. Henceforth, I, AdeBola Adewara, vow to stop eating at burials, even if you take care of your parents. That money you are spending on burials is unnecessary. This culture of wastage is common amongst we Christians who should know better.

I call on Pastors and Church leaders to please discourage this culture of wastage. The dead is dead. The amount many children did not spend on their parents when alive, they waste on their burials. Some people will boro boro for burials because they want to make statements. Even if you have the money, it’s a waste.

For those whose burials gulped multi-millions because the children could afford it, what memories of these parents are with us today? Are their names still on the lips of men? Are heir names still opening doors for generations after them? The million naira casket you bought, is rotten today. That millions could have touched more lives than feed the ants and earthworms, deep down in the soil.

How many people came to your house after the burials to thank you for your Swiss lace, for the musicians and cows you slaughtered for burials? They eat and the next day, go to the toilet. Shikena. Wastage! Why not invest that money in the lives of people who are alive? There are children, families, men and women around you needling help.

The children’s ministry in your Church needs assistance. The public primary school in your vicinity needs a library. You can institute a yearly Best Student Award in the name of your parent in the school. Give the winner a laptop, book, uniform support N100k every year. For life, these winners will be mentioning the award ceremony and how it changed their lives.

Who would remember your beef, chapman, beer, small chops, Swiss lace and your dancing steps before the musician a year after? How many people have come to your house to see the burial pictures on which you wasted money? Many burial preparations, financial contributions and spending have left many families in bickerings, pains, arguments, bitterness and debt.

I have told my children that any day I pass on, I don’t want any flamboyant burial. All they want to spend on burials should go on Best Student Awards in my alma mater, Timi Agbale Grammar School where I am the founding president of the Old Students Association.

It should also go on the publication of, and circulation of my books to all church and public libraries. Also as awards to children who did well in memory verse recitals during the Children Day Celebration in my Church.

In heaven, where I am with Jesus and the saints, we would be glad to watch all the proceedings. This is more meaningful to me than that crazy stupid day called Burial party. Rubbish! I pray that the values that make our society better, mankind in steady progression and salvation a desirable goal will not vanish in the sand of time.

We have encouraged wastage too much in our society. We watch the perpetuation of error with our eyes wide open with no one courageous enough to speak against it.

The best condition for evil to thrive is for good men like you and I to keep quiet. Let us strive to walk out of errors, damn negative culture and lay the feet of our children on enduring paths.

I challenge you to speak to your children, just as I did to mine, on the lofty paths they should follow when you passed on to eternity.

Thank you Peter Obi for being a great inspiration!
