Dr. Gary S. Maxey’s life has been inextricably bound up with theological education. His father and paternal grandfathers were very successful Bible college teachers and administrators, and Gary himself was born on a Bible college campus, as was also his wife Emma Lou.
Since their 1982 arrival in West Africa, Gary and Emma Lou have together established two theological schools in Nigeria and one in Ghana. They are blessed with four children who are all running after Jesus, along with eleven grandchildren.
The Maxeys are currently co-pastors of New Beginnings International Church in Lagos, ministering to internationals from around the world. At the same time, they find themselves continually drawn to the task of challenging, shaping and equipping church leaders for the incredible global role that lies ahead of the African Church.
Dr. Maxey is in demand as a conference speaker and has become a mentor to pastors and church leaders all around Nigeria and beyond. He is committed to living out his days in Nigeria, as a naturalized citizen. His burden for revival, for leadership training and for discipleship – as well as his interest in the history of the Nigerian Church – are all subjects of the writing and publishing that is steadily coming out of his heart and life. Keep your eyes open for more good things to come from the servant of the Lord.
THE WATS JOURNEY: A PERSONAL NARRATIVE
In this book, Dr. Maxey gives us the lively and fascinating story of how he and his wife and four young children ended up in Nigeria, from their native USA, in 1982. He tells the story of their early days in Port Harcourt where they experienced an amazing revival, at Calvary College of Theology. That unanticipated outpouring of the Holy Spirit is described in detail. It laid the groundwork for the later opening of the West Africa Theological Seminary in 1989. Since then WATS has relocated to Lagos and has become the largest nondenominational seminary in West Africa. Dr. Maxey speaks straight from his heart in this book describing both the success and the failures that were a part of this journey. If you want to read a book that will challenge you for revival and that will give you insight into why leadership training is so crucial for Africa this is the book to read!
NEW LIFE IN CHRIST
This highly practical book addresses the enormous need of the Nigerian Church for sound, scriptural and easy-to-read discipleship lessons.
It is the first in a series of twelve discipleship books under the general label, TEACH ME YOUR PATHS. New Life in Christ, like the other books to follow, consists of twenty-four weekly lessons that can be used in small groups or Sunday schools.
The book is divided into three units, with eight lessons each on the new birth, sanctification and growth in grace. Illustrations and study questions accompany each lesson. God willing, the second book in the series,
Discovering the Old Testament will be published by the first quarter of 2016.
LIVING IN NIGERIA ON PURPOSE: VOLUME 1
Here is a discipleship book is written specifically for expatriates living in Nigeria. Four volumes are planned and two have already been printed. These books grew out of Dr. Maxey’s role as pastor of New Beginnings International Church in Lagos – a congregation of expatriates from more than twenty-five countries on six continents. Each book has twenty-two lessons.
The lessons cover the broad scope of Christian discipleship, including units on engaging with God, engaging with my family, engaging with the church, and engaging with the world. In addition, each book begins with a series of lessons from famous Bible expatriates, including in this first volume Abraham, Joseph, Moses, Ruth and Aquila and Priscilla.
Throughout the book, lessons are followed by questions, as well as a focus on equipping, accountability and mission. Each lesson ends with a “Did You Know?” sidebar discussing interesting facts about Nigeria.
LIVING NIGERIA ON PURPOSE
The relatively transient nature of major segments of the expatriate
population in Nigeria makes Christian discipleship uniquely challenging. New Beginnings International Church of Lagos takes those challenges seriously. In this second volume of weekly studies, Pastor Gary Maxey starts by digging into the scriptures to study lives and lessons from famous Bible expatriates: Daniel, Esther and Mordecai, Paul and Amos. Throughout the rest of the book, Christian discipleship especially as it applies to those living outside their homeland focuses on engagement with God, with our families, with our church and with the world. The underlying conviction is that God truly wants us to LIVE NIGERIA ON PURPOSE.
The Seduction of the Nigerian Church
I have seen the seduction and deviation creeping into our midst since 1978 and the Lord awakened my heart to stand against it… Diagnosing a sickness to trace the causes has become the veritable way of medical practice now and it is cheaper than just swallowing all-purpose drugs. This book seeks such a diagnosis. It may appear as if it is an attack on our beloved Church and the cherished idols of several presidents and founders, but this surgical knife is for our good and it is to take away the cancerous cells before they overwhelm the entire body…
