Did you see the crowd in your church last night? Those are the people we call Bodunrin or Bodunde in Yoruba. They come to Church only on Cross Over Night, New Year eve or January 1.

Cross Over NightSo many of the Bodunrins were born in ‘Christians homes’, have Christian names, married to Christian spouses, etc but will not come to Church during the year for various reasons.

Reasons like — someone offended them in the church so they stopped coming; the pastor said something they disagree with, who is he; the pastor is using big cars and they are the ones ‘paying’ the tithes, so in order not to ‘pay’ tithes again, they stopped going to Church.

Many of the Bodunrins you saw last night were the wounded Christians, victim Christians who will abuse pastors on social media.

Many of the crowd you saw last night were acolytes of beer parlours who would say Jesus turned water to wine, so what is your problem telling them not to drink alcohol?

But at the end and beginning of each year, these Bodunrins know that there is God somewhere who rules in the affairs of men.

They know God is kind and agree to seek His face. This means Bodunrins are not totally lost or irredeemable. They can be won over to Christ. Their hearts are still available.

They are just angry, victims or discouraged Christians. But last night, what did we do in most Churches?

Cross Over services are free opportunities to meet them, a face to face opportunity which we often fritter away.

In so many Churches, we only pray, sing, deliver prophecies, collect offerings and share grace.

What is the salvation message of Cross Over Nights? How many Bodunrins were won to Christ last night? Is it not time to change tactics? Is it not time to do the unusual, to be more deliberate with the sudden explosion of people in the Church?

Church leaders should approach 2022 with a greater sense of soul winning. We should not fritter away such opportunities.

Many of the Bodunrins who came yesterday and did not see Jesus. Right now, they are back to their vomit because Churches were casual with them last night.

Praise the Lord.
